Welcome

Corporate Culcha, the Australian Government and the National Rugby League (NRL) are proud to present four Employment Expos in 2010 aimed at connecting NSW Indigenous youth with future employment and careers. The Expos will enable Indigenous job seekers and future job seekers to meet, talk to and connect with a wide variety of local and national employers on the day and provide them with the exciting opportunity to mingle with their NRL heroes.

Corporate Culcha, in collaboration with Dare to Lead for Business
corporate partners and the network of Dare to Lead schools,
is focused on facilitating Indigenous student’s transition
from school to employment and supporting Indigenous job
seekers into jobs made available by local and regional industry.

The Expos have already attracted the attention of many high
profile corporations and Government Departments looking to
recruit young Indigenous leaders of tomorrow. The Expos
will run from 9.30am to 2.45pm with free admission
for all attendees.

Locations and dates:

  • Dubbo on Tuesday 1 June
    at the Dubbo Civic Centre
  • Sydney on Wednesday 30 June
at the ANZ Stadium (to coincide with the
excitement surrounding the 3rd State of Origin)
  • Wagga Wagga on Wednesday 28 July, Bolton Park Sports Stadium
  • Newcastle on Wednesday 15 September at the Newcastle City Hall

The Event

The Expos will target Indigenous students in schools around the region but will also attract Indigenous youth looking for meaningful employment and career opportunities. Local businesses and employers will be subsidized to exhibit, with Indigenous businesses receiving tailored support to display.

Community

To ensure the success of the event, local Indigenous community organisations have been consulted and invited to participate by providing cultural activities and their input and advice has been sought to ensure the success of the event.

Program

The Expos will be informative and enjoyable and will include workshops, information sessions and an interactive activity program covering a range of topics, for example:

  • Mock interviews
  • Interactive workshops
  • Writing an application workshop
  • Deportment and grooming workshop
  • ‘Getting a loan’ advice workshop
  • Financial planning and budgeting information session
  • Understanding the workplace’ presentations
  • Apprenticeships – what are they?
  • ‘How to’ skills activities (eg, paving, surveying, forensic testing, bricklaying, simulators etc.)

Follow up

Corporate Culcha understands that follow-up to the Expo’s is fundamental to the success of the event itself. Dare to Lead schools will have their Aboriginal Education Officers and Careers Counselors liaise with individual students to ensure that careers ideas are matched by subject choices and possible work experience opportunities in the field of interest. Equally, consistent follow-up with Industry participants is a crucial point of difference for this event.

The Gala Dinner

Each Expo will be pre-ceded by a Gala Dinner to be held as a fund-raising opportunity for local Indigenous Cultural development programs. NRL players will be involved in the VIP dinner the night prior to the Expo (one seated at each table) and also players will be engaged in the delivery and the content of the Expo program of activities.

A diverse range of options have been included in both the Sponsorship and Exhibitor packages.

Schools
Choices

In today’s schools, many initiatives are in place that guide students with their subject
choices in an effort to allow them access to the future career of their choice.

In order for the transition from school to work to be successful, three key elements must be
in place. First the student must be able to imagine the career; second, they need the basic skills
or knowledge and third, have an opportunity to put these into practice.

For some students, a lack of skill or ability is not what stops them from reaching their goals. The greatest
hurdle can be imagining him or herself in a particular career…or even knowing that it is a career option!

Aspiration and opportunity for employment requires an honest, open sharing of information between students,
support staff and potential employers.

An important face-to-face opportunity

Corporate Culcha, the Australian Government and the National Rugby League (NRL) are proud to present four Employment Expos in 2010 aimed at connecting NSW Indigenous youth with future employment and careers. The Expos will enable Indigenous job seekers and future job seekers to meet, talk to and connect with a wide variety of local and national employers on the day and provide them with the exciting opportunity to mingle with their NRL heroes.

Corporate Culcha, in collaboration with Dare to Lead for Business (DTL4B) corporate partners and the network of Dare to Lead schools, is focused on facilitating Indigenous student transition from school to employment and supporting Indigenous job seekers into jobs made available by local and regional industry. For those students not yet at school leaving stage, the Expos will provide aspirational information and will provide advice that may potentially guide future subject choices. The Expos will target Indigenous students in middle years to school leavers (years 8 to 12) around the region but will also attract Indigenous youth looking for meaningful employment and career opportunities. The Expos have already attracted the attention of many high profile corporations and Government Departments looking to recruit young Indigenous leaders of tomorrow.

The Events

The Expos will run from 9.30am to 2.45pm with free admission for all attendees. BYO lunch*.
(* Note: students may bring a small amount of spending money as lunch will be available for purchase)

Locations and dates:

  • Dubbo Tuesday 1 June – Regional Theatre and convention centre (civic centre), Church St.
  • Sydney Wednesday 30 June - ANZ stadium (Sydney Olympic Park)
  • Wagga Wagga Wednesday 28 July - Bolton Park
  • Newcastle Wednesday 15 September - Newcastle City Hall, King St.

  • Practice interviews - keep the nerves in check!
  • How to write a winning job application
  • How to look good at interviews
  • ‘Getting a loan’ advice workshop
  • Financial planning and budgeting – know some financial basics
  • ‘Understanding the workplace’ – what to expect once you get the job!
  • Apprenticeships – what are they? Is it right for you?
  • ‘How to’ skills activities (e.g. paving, surveying, forensic testing, bricklaying, simulators)

Follow up

Corporate Culcha understands that follow-up to the Expos is fundamental to the success of the event itself. Schools will have their Aboriginal Education Officers and Careers Counselors liaise with individual students to ensure that careers ideas are matched by subject choices and possible work experience opportunities in the field of interest. Equally, consistent follow-up with Industry participants is a crucial point of difference for this event and will be facilitated by Corporate Culcha staff.

Dare to Lead (DTL) & Dare to Lead 4 Business (DTL4B)

Dare to Lead (DTL) with Dare to Lead for Business (DTL4B) and Corporate Culcha are focused on facilitating Indigenous student's transition from school to employment and supporting Indigenous job seekers through the JSA network to the jobs made available by local and regional industry. This strategy is also supported by Indigenous community members and organisations who help to build upon the local relationships required to achieve sustainability across schools, tertiary training organisations, industry engagement and government support agencies.

  • Dare to Lead – a focus on education outcomes - More
than 50% of schools have taken up the challenge to
support this vision with significant improvements in
student literacy and numeracy achievements, and
increased school retention and completion rates.

  • Dare to Lead for Business – a focus on job outcomes
    – engages with business & industry and sets realistic
    employment targets. Supports industry outcomes
    towards Indigenous employment, providing mentoring,
cultural awareness and on the job training. DTL4B
ensures the smooth transition from education and
    unemploymentto sustainable employment.

  • Corporate Culcha – a focus upon service provision to
industry programs either internally, within the organisationor
externally with Indigenous students, community and government
agencies designed to support this program.

  • Having DTL, DTL4B and Corporate Culcha engaged in the Expo outcomes brings a
level of integration which will benefit all participants ensuring opportunities towards
    employment outcomes are achieved.

NRL
David Gallop Welcome from David Gallop

The Inaugural All Stars game in February was more than a football match.

Held on the second anniversary of the Prime Minister’s Apology to the Stolen Generations, the Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars match became a focal point for Australians of all backgrounds to express their hope for a better future for our Indigenous peoples.

The game itself left a legacy of practical reconciliation with all funds raised being directed to community programs to assist those in need.

Central to this commitment to positive change has been the NRL’s partnership with the Federal Government through the Learn. Earn.Legend! brand. The Learn. Earn. Legend! Career Expos are an extension of that partnership and the NRL is proud to lend its support to these events.

By staying at school, finding a career path and becoming a ‘legend’ in their chosen field of employment, each young person can pursue their dreams.

While NRL players have a match plan on the field, we all need a life plan off the field.

The NRL hopes the involvement of its current and former players in these Expos will assist all participants develop their own life plan so that they too can become ‘legends’.

David Gallop
Chief Executive of the NRL

SYDNEY Expo

Hi Vanessa,

I’m writing to congratulate everyone on the dinner on Tuesday night the evening was well put together and I know our table enjoyed the evening immensely.

Thank you.

P.S: I hope this event will be run again next year, as an educational provider it gave us an opportunity to meet with potential students and establish networks which we hope will further develop opportunities for us to provide employment pathways for our students. Once again congratulations to all who were involved in expo.

TAFE Western Sydney Institute

DUBBO Expo

Hello Vanessa

Could you please thank the team for us . The expo was absolutely fantastic. The way it was run was excellent. The idea of the kids having to attend each stall and get a stamp so they could win a prize was brilliant! It gave the stall holders an opportunity to engage each kid as they came through. I believe it also gave the stall holders a feeling of being part of the overall experience, and made you felt that you got very good value for your money out of the expo.
